Put the Movies and TV Series Out of Mind not necessarily because they're poor (and some truly are) but only because Robert Anson Heinlein, Annapolis graduate, naval officer, and one heckuva writer, had Something To Say in everything he wrote, whether or not you agreed on that, and, most important for any writer, made you read it without the slightest coercion or gimmickry (hold this last thought). As for this book bear in mind when it was written but go along with the story to the very end and try not to compare-and-contrast with adaptations until you've finished the book. I'd first read it in nearly one sitting, and promptly forgot it, being . A classic political commentary dressed in a sci-fi wrapper Joe For all those who have only seen the movie, I urge you to stop reading this review right now and go out and buy the book and read it. Honestly, the movie does not do Starship Troopers justice. The book is not an action novel. It is not meant to entertain you with the endeavors of the Mobile Infantry as they battle the Bugs on various planets. This book is one of the greatest political commentaries of all time.Robert A. Heinlein expounds on controversial subjects throughout the work, from what it means to be a citizen to how the military functions (and its role in society), to how current political syste. Machinery's Handbook said Hard to choose Heinlein's BEST novel, but this one is definitely Top Three in my hierarchy!. Heinlein graduated from the Naval Academy, which is a VERY tough school, in the top quarter of his class. This novel is well informed by that experience, and should be required reading in high schools today. Not in English classes, but in whatever passes for Social Studies, if such still exist at all. It's his very best didactic novel, focusing on theory of government. The proposal that citizenship and the franchise be limited to those who have been honorably discharged from the military is well developed, and IMHO has great merit.
