Great modern translation J. C. Beadles I had read some years ago Professor Fagles' translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey and loved them both. Fortunately, before his recent death, Fagles also translated Virgil's Aeneid. I wasn't very familiar with the Aeneid, but this translation brings it alive. I don't know enough Latin to be an independent judge of the translation, but experts attest that this is a. ""A thing of beauty is a joy for ever" Keats" according to Ignotus. To have the Classics so close at hand we moderns must thank AMAZON and others. This Edition of the Aeneid takes us back to the time of John Dryden, the great English writer. He gives us a very polished translation of the Latin. Impossible to give us all the beauties and subtleties of the Latin yet it is a wonderful introduction to Virgil. An impelling story about the. AmazonCustomer said Great overall. Personally I think Virgil did a good job of showing he can write like Homer, even going so far as t parody characters from the Odyssey. Other than that he shows a lot of influence in glorifying the history of Rome so it was an enjoyable read in my opinion and a good classic to have.
