DESCRIPTION:

It is as though the man in a white suit and a cloud of cigar smoke thought there just might be a place where people in white robes stand in clouds of incense. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none." -- --Mark TwainMark Twain comes furtively like Nicodemus at night with this tribute to one of God's saints. Twain had to tell her story because she is the sole concrete argument against the pessimistic doctrines of his deterministic philosophy. George Rutler, Author, The Cure d'Ars Today. In doing so he tells a secret about himself. --

Few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. This is a fascinating and remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers.. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important but also his best work. Twain spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides: the French, for whom she raised an army to return the Dauphin to the throne, and the English, who fought the French in the Hundred Year's War and were ultimately Joan's executioners

"Very disappointed" according to Amazon Customer. Photo copied so that the image does not fill to the margins. The image only reaches about half the page. Not only is it displeasing to look at but the print is so small it is almost unreadable.. Twain's book is great - but this book has only half of the story! Annie Lewis The book is great - there is just one problem - it drops the rest of the story after Chapter 27 in the second section - just drops it! There was no indication of this in the description of the book when I bought it. The second section is missing Chapter 28 - Chapter 41, and the book entirely misses the third section with 24 chapters! Really, I would like my money back.. And every page seems a labor of love. If you are familiar with the story of Owen C. Marshall This was the work that Mark Twain was most proud of. And having just finished it, I can understand why. Twelve years of research. Two years to write. And every page seems a labor of love. If you are familiar with the story of Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, then give it a try. Just note that this is historical fiction. Twain has created a childhood friend to tell the story and act as biographer. His trademark wit is still there, but none of it is focus
