DESCRIPTION:
Aunt Bessie considers it unfair when the entire conference schedule is thrown into disarray by Mack Dickson's sudden arrival. Mack promises that what he has to say is important enough to warrant the upheaval. But even more turmoil follows when Bessie discovers Mack's body only a short time after he's finished giving his speech. This is the third book in the Isle of Man Cozy Mystery Series.. Bessie finds herself drawn into another investigation, and she's determined to drag her friends, Rockwell, Doona, and Hugh, in with her. Aunt Bessie considers Police Inspector Peter Corkill a poor substitute for her friend, John Rockwell. Once she turned 60, she stopped counting how many years that included. Aunt Bessie considers it an honor to be giving a presentation about her research at a conference at the Manx Museum. Miss Elizabeth Cubbon is known as "Aunt Bessie" to nearly everyone in her hometown of Laxey. With Corkill insisting that Mack's death was probably an unfortunate accident, Mack's slides that shocked the conference disappear. But the Manx Museum is out of Rockwell's jurisdiction and that means Corkill is in charge of the investigation, no matter what Bessie thinks. While she never earned a college degree, she's become something of an expert in the history of the island that she's called home for all of her adult life
"Loved the book" according to E.D.F.. I truly enjoyed this book. It is warm, funny, and highlights some of the ludicrous politics that infect academia (i.e., fundraising abilties over true knowledge). The introduction of Inspector Pete Corkill (sp?) was fun. He adds the right amount of gruff compassion. While Bessie tends towards extreme busybody tendencies of Jessica Fletcher, she has the charm of Miss Marple. That charm allows one to overlook her annoying quirks--"That's Miss Cubbon," and the lengthy diatrib. Great reading, interesting settings and well written. This author is a great one for me. I enjoy a tale with lots of good details in the settings, interaction with the characters plus the background. Can't go wrong with the Isle of Man books series. A reader doesn't have to read them in sequence, but it makes the stories even better if you do read them from the start. I do read a great deal and sometimes even the Kindle prices start wandering higher with the more famous authors, but these books are an EXCELLENT buy for the p. Murder mystery series with European settings. If you like stories set in European countries, a good mystery with believable characters, then this may be a series you would enjoy.
