jk said Nothing to Write Home About. This book is based on a "Nothing to Write Home About" according to jk. This book is based on a 2001 - 2002 travelling exhibition of still life paintings by French impressionist painters. It's an interesting topic since the Impressionists are much better known for their landscapes than for still life. But the book is small and doesn't cover nearly all the paintings in the exhibition. There is some discussion of the actual home life of some of the painters which I haven't seen anywhere else.If you are interested in this subject, don't waste your money on this book; instead buy Impressionist Still Life, by Eliza Rathbone, which is from the same exhibition. The book is full of high quality images, and just right descriptions of the paintings and the painters who created them. He likes the book quite a lot-and I've seen it pulled out in his studio a number of times.. Delightful little book. Surely not a comprehensive study of impressionist paintings, but a charming little book nonetheless - of nice quality printing and delightful illustrations. This is my second and was purchased as a gift.
Here are some of the most memorable masterpieces in this genre, from the most beloved artists of the movement including Caillebotte, Cezanne, Degas, Fantin-Latour, Gauguin, Mamet, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, and van Gogh. These works depicting flowers, fruit, and table settings provide glimpses into the quaint and beautiful private spaces of Paris in the late nineteenth century. But one aspect of their work has gone largely overlooked--the still-life painting. They evoke the comforts of a well-appointed home during the era when a new modern lifestyle and a new modern style of painting were emerging. This charming book was produced in conjunction with The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., which organized the landmark traveling exhibition Impressionist Still Life.. The Impressionists showed us a new way to look at the world with their graceful and fleeting visions of city streets and the countryside
