Backdrop more interesting than main plot I greatly enjoyed Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space trilogy and his other novels like Chasm City, House of Suns, Pushing Ice, etc. I'd call myself an AR fan (though I have not read the Poseidon's Children trilogy). Revenger, however, was disappointing to me. It occurred to me on several occasions that perhaps AR was writing for a juvenile audience. AR has created a backdrop for Revenger that is tant. "Highly entertaining semi-YA-style yarn" according to Tom Alaerts. Revenger is less dark and intense than Reynolds' famous Revelation Space books, yet that is not necessarily a bad thing - it is an adventure story with a teenage protagonist that is in essence a far future variant of treasure-hunt stories complete with pirates.Reynolds sets the scene wonderfully - we are in a far future, so far that several times civilisations have crumbled and rise again.
